Every machine on the floor, and what each one lets us say yes to.

Best Framing’s framing, printing and sign-making machines share one floor at its shop in Costa Mesa, Orange County. The scanner, the printers, the CNC table, the laser, the mat cutter, the drymount press, the wood shop and the van, and the reason one custom frame and a whole commercial project can both be finished in the same building.

It starts with a faithful copy of the original.

Whether you bring an original artwork or a print-ready digital file, our team can help prepare it for production. If you are just starting to reproduce your artwork and are looking for some guidance, we are happy to meet with you and recommend ways to develop it into a business.

Shaped, routed and lettered to the standard of the frame.

Our signage gets the same care as our framing. The laser, the CNC table and the mat cutter are here so that dimensional lettering, a shaped acrylic sign or a multi-opening mat is finished the way the frame around it is.

Laser cutter

Any color acrylic you want.

  • We design custom CAD files for the laser from your artwork, or from artwork we design in house
  • After cutting the acrylic we print color on the back of it
  • That gives you any color acrylic you want, instead of the few colors available in colored sheets

Multiple openings, lettering, shapes and art designs can all be programmed into the mat cutter. It is where the extra detail that sets a presentation apart gets cut into the board itself.

Milled, hand-finished and pressed flat before anything is fitted.

Typical custom framing has limitations related to size and finish. The wood shop and the press are how a piece gets past them.

The machines, the questions people ask.

What scanner do you use to reproduce artwork?

An SMA VersaScan 4870 flatbed scanner, which reproduces the original at up to 600 dpi. Our digital artists then go over every file, making sure the color and the composition are true to the original.

Which printer makes your giclée prints?

An Epson SureColor P20000, printing fine art with archival pigment inks on canvas, cold-press watercolor paper, or our matte and luster acid-free cotton papers.

What can your UV flatbed print on?

Many compatible flat materials, up to 60 by 96 inches: wood, acrylic, pearled and brushed aluminum, tile, cabinet doors and fabric. Bring us the material and we assess its suitability before production. We have printed on leather, ceramic tiles, barnwood, chalkboard, whiteboard, even a welcome mat.

What cutting machines do you have in the shop?

A laser cutter that works from custom CAD files, a Colex SharpCut flatbed cutter for rounded corners, beveled edges, routed holes and custom-shaped outlines in wood, metal or acrylic, and a Valiani Nexus Edge mat cutter for multiple openings, lettering and shapes.

Can you flatten a wrinkled print before framing it?

Our oversized drymount press can flatten waves and crinkles in suitable prints and posters by mounting them to acid-free foamcore. We assess each piece first, and discuss conservation options for originals. Canvas mount, fabric mount and cool mount are options too.
