Finished pieces, and the rooms they went home to.
These are finished pieces from Best Framing, a custom picture framing shop in Costa Mesa, Orange County. Photographs, art, jerseys, kimonos, mirrors, one of them 110 by 72 inches, custom framed on Placentia Avenue and printed, delivered or installed by the same team.
What goes around a print decides how it reads.
The moulding, the fillet and the width of the mat are chosen at the counter, with the real samples held against the piece rather than picked from a screen.

A signed Western print
An orange thunderhead over three riders, signed in the margin. It went into a carved black chevron moulding with a gold fillet, and a mat wide enough to hold the eye off the edge of the paper.
carved black chevron · gold fillet · wide white mat

The same corner, up close
A frame is judged at the join. The miter closes, the carved chevron runs through it without a break, and the gold fillet holds one clean line against the bevel of the mat.

A San Clemente map print
A map in a thin light-oak frame, hung over an entry bench that gets passed at arm’s length every day. Nothing ornate. The frame stays out of the way of a room people walk through.

The things that are not flat.
A swimsuit, a jersey, a wax seal. An object has depth, so the frame is built out to hold it. This is the one we design with you in person rather than over email.

Three vintage swimsuits
Each one floated in its own white deep box, so the knit and the ruching keep the shape they came in with. Photographed on the work table before they went out as a set of three.

Custom shadow box for a baseball jersey
A custom shadow box gives this baseball jersey room to hold its shape, with a carefully arranged display that keeps the player’s name and number in full view. The clean frame and coordinated backing keep the focus on the jersey.

A wedding invitation suite
The watercolors, the invitation and the order of the weekend, all floated on linen inside one ornate gilt frame. Everything that came in the envelope stayed in the piece, the wax seal included.

Past a certain size, framing becomes carrying.
Cut, joined and finished by hand in our own wood shop, with the moulding milled to order, then carried out by the people who built it.

A map, with a framer at each edge
Ochre mixed media, float framed in white so the ragged edges of the paper stay visible instead of being covered by a mat. The two framers standing at either edge are the scale.

An embroidered ceremonial robe
Gold and oxblood embroidery, fringed at the hem, floated in an ornate dark frame and stood upright on the showroom floor, shoulder to shoulder with the person beside it.

A vintage racing poster
World’s Greatest Drivers, in a deep black frame, laid flat in the shop while it is fitted. Two people on it, one at each end, and the frame still runs off both sides of the table.

Mirrors, cut to the opening.
Bring us the overall dimensions of the space and we provide the mirror. Quarter-inch glass, with or without a bevel, in whatever moulding the room is asking for.

Gold leaf, on a panelled wall
One tall mirror, centred between two sconces, with nothing else on the wall to share the work. When a mirror is the only piece in the room the profile and the leaf are the whole decision.

A pair over two sinks
Two black-framed mirrors over a white-oak double vanity. Both had to land at the same height over two different sinks.

Wide walnut on shiplap
One long dark-walnut frame running the width of a stone counter. Wide and low, so it reads as part of the joinery rather than as something hung on top of it.

A wall is one commission, not twenty.
Mixed mouldings that still belong to each other, sizes that step rather than repeat, and a hang that holds together from the doorway.

A coastal dining wall
This wall was framed a few steps from our counter. A vintage swimsuit in a shadow box, pennants each in their own frame, prints, oars and a fish study, all in pale mouldings so the mix still reads as one collection.

A stairwell, floor to ceiling
A salon hang climbing the stairs, black, gilt and natural mouldings together, small pieces filling the gaps between the large ones. It has to work while you are walking past it and while you are standing still at the bottom.

Six botanicals over a bed
Matching walnut frames, matching white mats, hung two rows by three above the headboard. A grid leaves nowhere to hide: every mat is the same width and every frame lines up with the one beside it.

Lobbies, clubhouses and guest rooms.
One frame spec, one mat, one hanging height, held across a whole wall. Site measurements and consultations first, then a crew that hangs the finished work straight.

Sixteen drawings, double height
Archival blueprints in matching black frames, set as a grid up a double-height lobby wall, with shadow-boxed hubcaps on the brick below. At that height the grid is the only thing holding the wall together, so the spacing is set on site.

A print series across a headboard
Five line drawings in matching black frames, stepped across a walnut headboard wall and sized so the run clears the bedside lights and stops short of the window.
five black frames · a stepped run · a headboard wall

A collected wall beside the bar
Landscape photographs, a framed emblem and a propeller, mixed sizes on one wall. Collected rather than matched, which is harder to hang than a grid because nothing lines up by default.

High quality materials. High quality workmanship. All the joints and mats are lined perfectly.
Four jobs, from the counter to the wall.
Some of these projects were made with designers, retailers and builders. We name them only once they have told us we may. The work and the facts we can state are here either way.
A showroom opening, printed, framed and installed by one team
A quick-turn custom art piece for the opening of a new showroom, with the printing, the framing and the installation handled start to finish by one team.
The showroom turned out incredible .... go check it out and see some of our work throughout the space.

Signage and framework for a home-tour stop
Newport Beach. A newly opened space welcoming a week of visitors as a stop on a neighborhood home tour. The finishing touches were ours: the signage, the framework, and a partner’s new pieces framed for their debut.
A huge thank you to @bestframing for the beautiful finishing touches through signage and framework, and for giving our new […] pieces the debut they deserve.

Four 12-foot floaters, on a truck to Northern California
An order for 12-foot floater frames that landed three days before it had to be on a truck overnight, to be installed the following Monday. Four frames, 144 × 36 inches, on inch-and-a-half stretcher bars, built in our own wood shop.
Customer asked for 12-foot floaters and I said yes. We’ve been deep in developing the woodshop lately, and honestly...we’re loving what’s coming out of it.

Could you frame something like this?
Can you frame a wedding invitation suite with the wax seal?
Yes. One wedding invitation suite in our portfolio was floated on linen inside an ornate gilt frame, and everything that came in the envelope stayed in the piece, the wax seal included.
How do you frame a jersey so it doesn't sit flat?
A jersey wants to sit the way it sat on a body, not flat like paper, so it goes in a shadow box deep enough for the shoulders. An object has depth and the frame is built out to hold it, which is why we design it with you in person.
Can you design and hang a gallery wall?
Yes. We treat a wall as one commission, not twenty: mixed mouldings that still belong to each other, sizes that step rather than repeat, and a hang that holds together from the doorway. Site measurements and consultations come first, then our crew hangs the finished work straight.
Can you build very large frames, like 12-foot floaters?
Yes. We built four 12-foot floater frames, 144 by 36 inches, in our own wood shop, and we made, delivered and installed a framed mirror 110 by 72 inches.
Can I see finished framed work in person?
Yes. Our building at 1671 Placentia Avenue in Costa Mesa holds an art gallery with finished, framed work on the wall, and a showroom with a wall of hundreds of corner samples. Walk in Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm or Saturday 9am to 1pm, no appointment required.
