Oversized framing, past 48 by 96 inches.
Best Framing designs, builds and installs oversized frames in Costa Mesa, Orange County, for pieces past 48 by 96 inches: wedding gowns, kimonos, movie posters, large textiles and long panoramics. When no catalog moulding reaches, we mill one in our own wood shop.
What counts as oversized framing?
Anything past 48 × 96 inches, the size where the majority of frame shops stop. We have ample experience with gigantic pieces that many other stores have turned away, and we design, create and build them under one roof in Costa Mesa.
A map, with a framer at each edge
Ochre mixed media, float framed in white so the ragged edges of the paper stay visible instead of being covered by a mat. The two framers standing at either edge are the scale.
A vintage racing poster
In a deep black frame, laid flat in the shop while it is fitted, one of us at each end.
An embroidered ceremonial robe
Floated in an ornate dark frame and stood upright on the showroom floor, shoulder to shoulder with the person beside it.
Where does a moulding that long come from?
Our own wood shop. Typical custom framing has limitations related to size and finishes, so when a catalog moulding cannot reach, we custom mill a profile and have it hand finished to match your specifications.

Four 12-foot floaters.
“Customer asked for 12-foot floaters and I said yes.” Four frames, 144 × 36 inches, built in our own wood shop and on a truck overnight to Northern California.
Chopped and joined by hand.
German, our chop-and-join specialist, has been with Best Framing for over 20 years. By our estimate he has chopped and joined more than half a million frames in his 30+ years of frame making.
Pressed flat first.
Our oversized drymount press can flatten waves and crinkles in suitable prints and posters by mounting them to acid-free foamcore. We assess each piece first, and discuss conservation options for originals.
Can you frame a wedding gown, a kimono or a movie poster?
Yes. Wedding gowns, kimonos, movie posters and large textiles are among the gigantic pieces we have framed, each one planned around how it is supported, how deep the frame stands and how it will hang.
Gowns, kimonos and robes.
Designed in person with the garment in front of us, then floated or mounted in a frame built out to hold it.
Movie and racing posters.
Fitted flat on the bench in a deep frame. Waves and crinkles in a suitable print can often be flattened in the drymount press before it goes in, once we have assessed the piece.
Panoramics and maps.
Long panoramics and oversized works on paper, like the ochre map we float framed in white so its ragged edges stay visible.
Mirrors.
A framed mirror 110 by 72 inches, built in the shop, then carried, lifted and hung by the same crew. We build the frame and we provide the mirror.
How does a large frame get to the wall?
In our own van, or in a crate we build for it. We deliver in and around Orange County for the work we produce, we can arrange pickup of large items to be framed, and our crew installs the finished piece.
Out through the van doors
Because we frame a lot of large items, we deliver them ourselves, in our own van.

A crate built for it
For large pieces, multiple-piece orders or long distances we build a custom wood crate and ship it on our freight accounts. We confirm receiving requirements, such as a forklift, before booking shipment.
Leveled on the wall
Installed by the crew that made it, from a single piece to a wall twenty-five feet across.
Why is a large piece planned in person?
Because size changes everything: the moulding, the glazing, the weight, and the way the piece has to be carried, crated and hung. Framing over 48 × 96 presents many challenges the majority of frame shops are not equipped to handle, so we plan it with you, around the piece.

Bring it, or have us collect it.
Walk in Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm or Saturday 9am to 1pm. If the piece will not fit in your car, call +1 (949) 791-8780 and we will arrange to pick it up.
Glazing chosen with you.
Museum-quality or UV-protective glazing is chosen with you for the piece, with its size and its journey to the wall in mind.
“I picked up some large frames for my neighbor […] the guy that helped me load was the best […] made a couple of bumpers out of cardboard to keep them from sliding around in the back of my 4runner, thank you!”
Vince Smith · November 2025

Can you make a frame to match an existing finish?
Yes. If you are looking to match a particular finish, we can custom mill a moulding profile in our own wood shop and have it hand finished to match your specifications.
